Can a parish meeting claim gift aid

Question

Our Parish Meeting had need for a new village bench on the green.

A nunber of people (not all from this village)  gave various amounts of money varying from £5 up to over £500

We raised some £700 in total.

As your contact poin,t I was asked if the Meeting is in any way, able to obtain gift aid on the donations?  I dont know... do you??

So far as I know, gift aid is only available for gifts to registered charities.  If your locality is raising substantial sums, it may be worth creating a charitable trust.  It does involve some extra administration, and requires people who are willing to be the trustees.
