The chairman of a local council resigns by writing to the other members of the council. This action is irrevocable and takes effect when the resignation is received by other councillors.

A copy should also be sent to the clerk so that appropriate procedures can be followed. If the chairman is also resigning from the council, the correct procedures for filling a casual vacancy need to be followed.
