GRANTS POLICY

It is a good thing for every council that is willing to consider making grants to devise a policy and  publish it. The policy should reflect the factors that limit what a council can do, and also enforce good practice to guide sound decision making.

Don't quite know what happened with this thread as it somehow got started with the GPC thread. My problem is that my PC  have set a policy for grants up to £2k but for amounts above that threshold that policy gets ignored.  Are there different forms of grants ie large and small or should there be on policy fits all?

Grants come under different powers. Councils have a number of specific powers. They can also use section 137 of the LGA 1972 to spend on anything that gives commensurate benefit to citizens. But I don't know of anything that says the size of a grant requires different rules. A local decision could be made on that basis, but I would expect there to be some policy at every level. It's not mandatory, but it is certainly good practice.
