Can a committee chairman cancel a meeting without giving councillors the reason when asked

A meeting of a committee has been cancelled by the chairman and when I asked the office why, no reason was given. Is that lawful or can meetings only be cancelled under certain criteria and if so what are they?

I can't think of any legislation that would prevent it.  Although on the other hand a meeting that has been lawfully arranged should normally go a head unless there is some clear reason why not.
