We were about to elect two Cllrs to the Management Group, but one Cllr wanted to stop this and instead simply accept the two females ( to 'balance' up the group ! ) from the list of nominees. Our election procedure is the Standard Model one. Could the Council simply have voted to override the SO and vote to accept the suggestion irrespective of the reason? Fortunately the Council voted not to accept the suggestion, but was it even correct to have that vote?

I'm not clear which standing order you were voting to override. Any appointment should be made on merit, as positive discrimination is still discrimination.
