Might be a stupid question but if a councillor informs the council that they intend to resign from a future date - what date do they cease to be a councillor, would it be from the date in their resignation letter or would it be the date they submitted the letter.

An issue appears to have come up on the local council where a councillor announced a few months ago that they intended to finish in May 2021, there appears to be some confusion as to whether they ceased to be a councillor from the moment they submitted their resignation letter or from the date they indicated (assuming they did not retract their decision to resign)

Is there any guidance on this?

Thanks
