Asking for votes

There are two persons eligible to become Mayor on our council. Is is permissible to directly ask councillors to vote for you?

Yes, perfectly legal and normal practice to seek other councillors support, in some councils standing orders require a proposer and seconder for the candidate, impossible if you aren't allowed to ask for support.

For employment, eg vacancy for a clerk, then that is not permitted.

Thank you for your reply but I'm now not sure if I worded my question properly. The 2 candidates have already been proposed and seconded. Something I did not mention previously. One if them is now privately contacting Councillors asking them to vote for him. Does your reply still apply in those circumstances?

The thing we have remember is that councillors are politicians (however much they may protest the idea), so it would be perfectly fair to ask to people to support them.
