Donations from village businesses

The parish council is asking the local village business for donations to replace waste bins.

Is this OK?  As we thought that was what the precept was for? Is it cheeky or the done thing?

Thank you

They can ask, but not demand, it would be classed as public subscription.

Perfectly legal.

Much obliged. Clears that up very well.

Some businesses might want to sponsor the bins, a bit like some businesses sponsor roundabout and planters.  Its good PR for them too.

and thank you as well for your comments; appreciated and interesting.considering the rates some of them pay!
rates that parish or town councils have no involvement in!
So I understand. It all goes to central government but they don't get it as to why they should fork out even more. They say; "you have a precept, use it instead of sponging off us".
I can understand in a way. Thanks again
