Chaplin to the Council?

Our Mayor has asked, through the Clerk, that we appoint a Chaplin to the Council from one of the Church's within the Town. In our multi-faith society is this request valid in 2018?

If you are a council with the power of general competence, then yes they can appointment one (following a vote). The law was clarified under Eric Pickles, when they tried to ban prayers before council meetings.

Thanks for your prompt reply. The Chaplin would be from one of our Christian Churches in a Town that has other faiths (Muslim etc). Would they (other faiths) have a right to seek some representation?
