I am unsure what I can claim for. I do not want to put in a claim just for somebody to report me or complain about it!

Is there a general rule as to an amount?

I presume from this and your other question (and your username!) that you are a councillor. Only your Clerk can properly answer this question for although councillors at any level can claim out of pocket expenses a lot will depend on your council's standing orders and, to some extent, usual practice in this regard.
