Does this platform support images other than by inserting a URL to (presumably) an image which is already online?

There is a way to do it, but it would only work with small images.Most images would be too big to get around the character limit the site imposes for posts.

There are plenty of websites that allow you to upload an image for free (some don't even require registration) so the easiest thing would be to host them their and just use the link. 

I used https://postimages.org to host the image below. Took me seconds, no account needed.
