Probationary period for co-opted councillors?

Question

Is there any way somebody can be co-opted to a council seat for a probationary period, say 6 months?
Or is it the case that once co-opted that person is on the council (until the next elections) and cannot be removed even if they turn out to be disruptive and result in other councillors resigning?

Answer 1

Once co-opted they serve until the next ordinary election.  No such thing as a probationer.

Thankyou John. I thought that was the answer but wanted to check. There’s a good reason for asking the question and I would have explained but the very rude behaviour of RAC means I’m not going to spend any more time on this forum. It’s a shame because I thought this was going to be a very helpful source of constructive advice for me and the other very inexperienced councillors on our PC. Over and out.

If you think that’s rude you’re going to be horrified by the reaction you get to having to make a decision about a planning application, a grant funding request or a facilities rent rise.
There’s a steep learning curve ahead and being easily faux offended is not an attribute that will serve you, your council nor your community well….
